ChatGPT on iPhone: App Store Download & Sign-In Guide (2026)
Short answer: there are two routes on iPhone. For the app, switch to a US Apple ID, then download it from the App Store. An empty search result on a China account is expected, because ChatGPT isn't listed there. If you'd rather not touch your Apple ID, open chatgpt.com in Safari and use the web app.
📌 Updated 2026-10-27. App Store availability and account requirements change; where this guide differs from what you see, trust the App Store.
| Step | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Check whether you have a US Apple ID | No account yet? Register one first. Already have one? Skip ahead |
| 1 | Sign in to the App Store with the US account | Affects the App Store only, not the apps already on the phone |
| 2 | Search for ChatGPT, confirm the developer is OpenAI | A China account can't see it; this step needs the US account |
| 3 | Sign in, or register first | An existing web account works as-is |
| Alt | Open chatgpt.com in Safari | No region switch needed; can be added to the Home Screen |
The Android route is a different problem entirely — the blocker there is Google services, not the App Store. See Install ChatGPT on Android if that's your phone.

Before You Start: Two Things to Check
First, whether you have a US Apple ID. The China App Store doesn't carry ChatGPT, so there's no way around this step. If you already have a US account, skip to Step 2.
Second, whether your iOS version is new enough. Open the ChatGPT listing in the App Store and scroll to the Compatibility section. Whatever it says there is the current requirement, and it's more reliable than any guide, including this one.
Once those two are settled, the rest is switching accounts and tapping download. Ten minutes on a good day.
Step 1: Get a US Apple ID
Registering a US Apple ID needs three things: an email address outside China that can receive mail, a US address, and a payment method (choosing None is fine during signup).
The details matter here — which address to use, how verification works, what to do about the payment field — so they have their own guide. Follow how to register a US Apple ID, then come back to Step 2.
If you already have a US account, don't register another one. Repeated signups on the same phone number tend to trip Apple's risk checks, and recovering from that is harder than the signup itself.
Step 2: Download ChatGPT from the App Store
- Open Settings. Your Apple account is the first row
- Tap Media & Purchases. On older iOS versions, scroll down in Settings and look for the App Store row
- Choose Sign Out, then sign back in with the US account
- Open the App Store and search for ChatGPT
- Confirm the developer is OpenAI OpCo, LLC, then tap Get

The button in the screenshot says Open because that phone already has the app installed. On a first download it says Get. What you're checking is the developer line and the icon, not the button.
Two things worth knowing:
- Signing out only affects the App Store account. Apps already on the phone stay put, and iCloud and Find My are unaffected
- The search results can include wrapper apps that imitate the real thing. Check the developer line before you install anything
Don't open the app yet. Step 3 needs an account first.
Step 3: Sign In, or Register First
If you already have a ChatGPT account: open the app, tap sign in, and pick email and password, Google or Apple. An account you used on the web works here directly, with no new registration.
If you don't have one yet: registration can't skip phone verification, and the account's region has to be one OpenAI supports. That path has a lot more steps, so follow how to sign up for ChatGPT, then come back and sign in.
Once you're in, the app works normally. If it spins forever, try a network that reliably reaches ChatGPT. In most cases that's a network problem, not an account problem.
Step 4: What the iPhone App Actually Adds
These are the things the web version does worse, and the main reason to install the app:
Voice conversations. Tap the voice icon next to the input box and talk. Answers come back as audio too, which is useful while driving, walking or cooking.
Photo input. Point the camera at a menu, a whiteboard or a paper document and have it extract or explain the content. Much faster than photographing it and moving the file to a computer.
Files. Tap the attachment button next to the input box and pick a PDF or spreadsheet from the Files app. Files that arrive through WeChat or email need saving to Files first.
No Region Switch? Use It in Safari
If you only need ChatGPT now and then, put the region switch aside. Open chatgpt.com in Safari on the iPhone and sign in the same way you would in the app.
To make it behave more like an app, add it to the Home Screen:
- Open chatgpt.com in Safari and sign in
- Tap the Share button in the middle of the bottom bar
- Scroll down to Add to Home Screen, name it, and confirm
The icon then opens in its own window without browser chrome. What it can't do is voice conversations or direct camera capture.
Pros and Cons
What the app gives you
- Voice conversations and photo input are app-only
- Notifications reach the lock screen, so you're not opening it manually to check
- Sign in once and it stays signed in
What to keep in mind
- A US Apple ID is mandatory, which is where most people stop
- After switching, updating other apps asks for the original account's password
- In-app purchases need a US payment method, and declined cards are common
What the web app gives you
- No region switch: open Safari and go
- The account syncs with your desktop, so a conversation started on one device continues on the other
- Added to the Home Screen, it covers most everyday use
Who This Is For
- iPhone users who want ChatGPT but can't find it in the App Store
- People who already have a ChatGPT account and want it on the phone
- Anyone who doesn't want to deal with a US account and is fine with the web app
FAQ
Q: Why can't I find ChatGPT in my App Store? A: The China App Store doesn't list ChatGPT, so an empty result is expected. Switch to a US Apple ID, or open chatgpt.com in Safari.
Q: Can I still update WeChat and Alipay after switching regions? A: Yes, but the update asks for the password of the account that bought the app. Switch over when you need a foreign app, then switch back.
Q: Do I need a new account to use ChatGPT on iPhone? A: No. If you already have one, sign in directly with email and password, Google or Apple.
Q: The App Store declines my card for an in-app purchase. What now? A: Check that the card supports overseas charges and that the billing address matches. Don't keep retrying — risk controls kick in fast. A physical-card ChatGPT Plus top-up is the fallback.
Q: How different are the web app and the iOS app? A: Everyday conversation and file uploads are close. Voice conversations and photo capture need the phone's hardware and are app-only.
