US Apple ID Registration Tutorial: Bypass the Final-Step Error with Incognito Mode
There are plenty of US Apple ID tutorials online, but most people follow them and still get stuck with an error message at the final step.
The problem is the browser.
Apple's registration page reads your browser cookies and history to determine your region. Once it identifies you as a "non-US user," the registration process blocks you at the final step.
The solution is simple: use incognito mode. An incognito window carries no cookies or browsing history, so Apple cannot determine your real region, and registration proceeds smoothly.
I've used this method to register dozens of accounts without a single failure. The whole process takes about 3 minutes.

Preparation
Before starting, have the following items ready:
1. A brand-new email address Must be an email that has never been used to register an Apple ID. If you're unsure, just create a new email address to be safe. Gmail or Outlook both work.
2. A usable phone number One phone number can be bound to a maximum of three Apple IDs. If this number is already bound to three, switch to a different number.
3. A US address It's recommended to use a US address generator to generate a real, usable US address including street, city, state, and zip code. Choose a tax-free state (Oregon, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire) so you pay no tax on future purchases.
4. A stable network connection Maintain a stable network connection throughout the process. Don't operate when the signal is weak or the connection is frequently dropping — a mid-process disconnection may cause registration to fail.
Browser choice: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari all work. The key is that you must use incognito mode — this step determines the success rate.
Step 1: Enable Incognito Mode
Using Chrome as an example:
- Click the three dots icon in the upper-right corner of the browser
- Select "New Incognito Window"

- In the incognito window's address bar, enter the Apple ID registration page: https://account.apple.com/account

Step 2: Fill in Registration Information
2.1 Basic Information
- Name: Fill in your pinyin name
- Date of Birth: Fill in your actual date of birth

2.2 Email and Password
- Email: Enter the new email you prepared
- Password: Must include uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, at least 8 characters
2.3 Phone Verification
- Phone Number: Enter your usual mainland China number
- Verification Method: Select SMS verification
- App & Data Privacy: Check this option
- Notifications and other options: Recommend unchecking all
Enter the SMS verification code and click "Continue."

2.4 Email Verification
Apple will send a verification code to the email you provided. Check your inbox, enter the code, and click "Continue."

Enter the phone SMS verification code again, then click "Continue."
Step 3: Confirm Account Region
After verification passes, you'll land on the personal information page. At this point, your account is already set to the US region — no additional address entry is needed.

Click "Personal Information" to view account details and confirm that the country or region displays "United States."
Note: If it still shows another region, it means your browser leaked your real region during the registration process. Close the window, reopen a new incognito window, and go through the process from the beginning.
Step 4: Log in to App Store for Verification
Log in to the App Store with your new account to verify it has switched to the US region.
4.1 Sign Out of Your Old Account
Open your iPhone Settings, tap the Apple ID at the top:

Tap "Media & Purchases":

Tap "Sign Out":

Note: In newer iOS versions, Apple ID and App Store accounts are managed separately. You don't need to sign out of your iCloud account — you only need to replace the App Store login account.
4.2 Sign In with Your New Account
Open the App Store, tap the avatar icon in the upper-right corner:

Tap "Sign in with Apple Account", then tap "No" in the popup dialog.

Enter your new account email and password, then enter the SMS verification code and tap "Done."

4.3 Verify It Worked
After signing in successfully, search for ChatGPT or any other overseas app in the App Store. If it shows up normally with a download button, you've successfully switched to the US region.
FAQ
Why does it always throw an error at the final step?
It's most likely that your browser's cookies have leaked your real region. Close the current window, reopen a new incognito window, and go through the process from the beginning.
Is incognito mode really necessary?
Yes, it's a must. This is the core reason this method works reliably. When you use a regular window, Apple reads your browsing history and cookies, and once it identifies you as a non-US user, it blocks you.
Do I need to add a payment method after registration?
No. A US Apple ID can download free apps without a payment method. If you want to purchase paid apps, you can top up with US gift cards.
Will using a fake US address cause problems?
The addresses generated by address generators are real, legally valid addresses — they're just unrelated to you. Apple won't mail anything to you. As long as the address format is legal, it will pass verification.
Can one phone number register multiple US accounts?
One phone number can be bound to a maximum of three Apple IDs (including both domestic and US region). Beyond this limit, you'll need a different number.
